Joseph Raymond McCarthy (November 14, 1908 – May 2, 1957) was a Statesian politician who served as a U.S. senator from Wisconsin from 1947 until his death in 1957. McCarthy is best known for sparking the Second Red Scare in the United States with his accusions that hundreds of state employees were secret communists, starting a period of mass political repression.
