Murder is the intentional and unjustified/unlawful killing of one person by another. It differs from manslaughter in that manslaughter does not require intent. Justified killings (e.g. in self-defence or of enemy combatants in just wars) are also generally not considered murder, nor are the killings of non-persons (e.g. of a foetus via an abortion or of non-human animals). Some jurisdictions distinguish between murder in the first and second degrees, the former being premeditated.
