The National Liberation Front (FLN) is a political party in Algeria that led the national liberation war against France from 1954 to 1962.[1]
Formation
After getting out of prison, Ahmed Ben Bella and eight other revolutionaries met in 1954 to found the FLN. They were from artisan or petty-bourgeois families and included both Arabs and Berbers.[1]:119
War of independence
The FLN began the Algerian War of Independence on 1 November 1954. The Communist Party and the the liberals both supported the FLN.[1]:120–21
One-party state
Factions of the FLN fought each other from July to September 1962. The 1963 Constitution of Algeria made the FLN the only legal party, and it arrested communists and members of the PSR, led by former FLN member Mohammed Boudiaf. It also expelled Ferhat Abbas, who criticized the framing of the constitution.[1]:123
