Saddam Hussein (28 April 1937 – 30 December 2006) was an Iraqi pan-Arab bourgeois revolutionary who served as president of Iraq from 1979 until he was overthrown in 2003 during the Iraq War. He previously served as the vice president from 1968 to 1979 and also as the prime minister from 1979 to 1991 and later from 1994 to 2003. He was a notable figure in the Ba'athist movement and served as secretary general of the Iraqi branch of the Ba'athist Party from 1992 to 2006.
Saddam has a long history of collaboration with the west, and is purported to have worked with the CIA since 1959, who helped him seize power in 1963. The U.S. also supported Saddam throughout his invasion of Iran from 1980 to 1988, providing him with armaments, intelligence and chemical weapons.[1] However, the west later turned on him due to his nationalistic development of Iraq and invaded Iraq twice, first via the Gulf War and then in the Iraq War, where they deposed then executed him after a show trial.
Arrest and execution[edit | edit source]
The United States invaded Iraq in 2003 and captured Saddam. They organized a show trial against him and murdered three of his defense lawyers. Ramsey Clark attempted to defend him and expose the crimes of the U.S. imperialists. He was executed on 30 December 2006.[2]
