The Social Democratic Student Federation was founded in May 1960 by pro-SPD university students in opposition to the Socialist German Students' Federation and its leftward shift. It became the student wing of the SPD and remained that until 1971, when, after continuisly being pulled to the left by the SDS, it was purged from the SPD. It remained as an independent organization until 1992.[1]
