VK (short for its original name Vkontakte; Russian: ВКонтакте, meaning InContact) is a Russian social media and social networking service based in St. Petersburg, Russia, and launched in 2006. Vkontakte is available in multiple languages but is most commonly used by Russian speakers. Users can message each other publicly or privately, create groups, public pages, and events; share and tag images, audio, and video and play browser related games.
The service had 500 million accounts as of August 2018. As of November 2022, it was the 6th most popular website in the Russian Federation. It was extremely popular in Ukraine until its ban by the Rada in 2017.
According to Similarweb, an "Israeli" web analytics company that specializes in web traffic and performance, VK was the 16th most visited website in the world.
