Variable capital

Variable capital (V; German: variables Kapital) refers to the capital invested in labour power (i.e., wages) by the bourgeoisie. It differs from constant capital in that, whereas the latter merely imparts existing value to commodities, the former enables the creation of new, surplus value, which can quantitatively differ depending on a worker's productivity (thus being "variable").
