The National Liberation Front of South Vietnam (NLF or NLFSV) was a communist revolutionary organization in Vietnam. It organized the People's Liberation Armed Forces, which consisted of both guerrilla units and uniformed troops. The PLAF had 60,000 official soldiers in addition to hundreds of thousands of guerrillas.[1] Despite U.S. attempts to lure the NLF into disadvantageous situations, the NLF dictated the timing and location of combat more than 70% of the time. By 1964, it controlled 40% of the territory of South Vietnam.[2]

Name[edit | edit source]

The U.S. Information Agency created the derogatory term "Viet Cong" (Vietnamese communist) to refer to the NLF, although it did contain some non-communist nationalists.[1]
