Lei Feng was a soldier in the People's Liberation Army and a national hero of China. After his death in 1962, Mao designated 5 March as Lei Feng Day.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Lei Feng was born in a poor peasant family in 1940. Japanese fascists killed his father and he was an orphan by age seven. After Mao Zedong founded the PRC in 1949, he was able to go to school for free.[1]

Military service[edit | edit source]

Lei Feng joined the People's Liberation Army at age 20. He donated more than a year's worth of savings to flood victims in Liaoning in 1960. He died in an accident in the line of duty in 1962.[1]
