Great Jolof, also known as the Jolof Empire or Wolof Empire, was a state in what is now Senegal. The Wolof people had six states: Baol, Cayor, Salum, Sine, Walo and Wolof. The states were each led by an elected chief, and all chiefs were subordinate to a paramount chief.[1]
Class system[edit | edit source]
The Wolof had an aristocracy, artisans, and slaves. Slaves could own immovable property. Musicians were treated as a separate caste in addition to the three classes.[1]
