Ayman Muhammad Rabi al-Zawahiri (19 June 1951 – 31 July 2022) was the leader of al-Qaeda from 2011 to 2022.[1]
Early life[edit | edit source]
As a doctor in Egypt, al-Zawahiri was convicted for a conspiracy that killed President Anwar al-Sadat.[1]
Death[edit | edit source]
Some reports claimed that al-Zawahiri died of natural causes in 2020.[1]
On 1 August 2022, Joe Biden announced that he had approved a CIA Hellfire missile strike that killed al-Zawahiri in Kabul. However, the Taliban never found a body and said that his house was empty at the time of the strike. The U.S. government had no DNA confirmation of al-Zawahiri's death.[1]
