Diosdado Cabello Rondón (born Maturín, Monagas state; April 15, 1963) is a Venezuelan retired military officer and politician. He is a deputy to the Venezuelan National Assembly and vice-president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), where he previously served as president. He is also an active member of the army, with the rank of captain.

He entered politics after the attempted coup d'état of February 4, 1992. After Hugo Chávez came to power in February 1999, Cabello held several positions during his government. In January 2002 he was appointed Vice President of the country. From April 13 to 14, 2002, he held the presidency of Venezuela, for approximately 4 hours, after the resignation of the de facto president, Pedro Carmona Estanga, until the restoration of institutionalism, when he handed over power to the constitutional president, Hugo Chávez. He was vice-president of the Republic, occupied several ministries, such as Public Works and Housing, as well as the governorship of Miranda between 2004 and 2008.

Chávez appointed him president of the PSUV in 2011. When Chávez died, he was mentioned as his possible successor, although this did not happen. In 2012 he was elected president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, a position he held until 2016. Between 2018 and 2020, he was the president of Venezuela's National Constituent Assembly. He became a prominent member of Chávez's Fifth Republic Movement (MVR) and is considered the second most important person within the Bolivarian Revolution.

In 2014, Diosdado Cabello founded his own weekly TV program on Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), Con el Mazo Dando.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Political persecution of communists[edit | edit source]

Cabello is one of the protagonists of the the political persecution[1] against the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) promoted by the PSUV.[2][3]

In 2021 he began to use his TV program (Con el Mazo Dando) to attack and undermine the PCV, promoting the matrix of a supposed division in the ranks of the communist party and allegeding that the PCV was subordinated to imperialist plans.[4][5]

A letter from the supposed “grassroots” of the PCV to Diosdado Cabello signed by the mercenaries Zoilo Arostegui, Carlos Fermín and Darío Fermín.

In the end of 2021 he received supposed letters of support from "regional organizations of the PCV". In September 2022 one of the letters from individuals claiming to be PCV members was leaked, it requested the PSUV's intervention in the PCV. However, it was revealed that the signatories (Zoilo Arostegui, Carlos Fermín and Darío Fermín) were not PCV members but largely affiliated with the PSUV.

In February 4, 2023 Cabello ordered the public appearance of supposed "PCV grassroots" supporting the government's policies. The PSUV provided logistical and financial support, using individuals who pretended to be PCV members.[6][7][8]

Monagas State Governor's office supports the diffusion of a press conference calling for a “rescue” of the PCV in Monagas State, with the purpose of assaulting PCV in the state.

The PSUV allocated significant resources for a meeting of these "grassroots" in February 11, 2023, which revealed that the supposed PCV members did not exist, and the PSUV recruited participants from its ranks and state organizations. The Governor's Office of the State of Monagas is probably the source of logistical and financial support for the execution of the plan of assault against the PCV.[9][10]

In March 29, 2023 Cabello introduced the leaders of the PSUV-recruited "PCV grassroots" on his TV program, one of the leaders being Griseldys Herrera, confirming that the letters from PCV members were fabricated.[11][12]
