- Soviet military leader, Minister of Defence of the Soviet Union, and recipient of the Hero of the Soviet Union award Georgy Zhukov dies at the age of 77.
1984
- The Battle of Orgreave occurs during the United Kingdom Miners Strike of 1984-1985. It began when picketting miners were attacked by police. By the end of the fighting more than 123 people were injured and 95 striking miners were arrested.
