He was the son of Semyon Efimovich Solzhenitsyn, a shepherd, and Pelageya Pankratievna Solzhenitsyna. Solzhenitsyn volunteered in 1914 to fight the Germans, and was awarded the Cross of St. George for bravery. He married Taisiya Solzhenitsyna, née Shcherbak, in Belarus in 1917.
