Ahmaud Marquez Arbery (May 8, 1994 – February 23, 2020) was a Black man who was murdered by three white supremacists in 2020. Along with George Floyd and others, his murder caused anti-racist protests across the United States.[1]

Murder

Three white men in a pickup truck chased Arbery for five minutes on February 23, 2020 while he was jogging. Gregory and Travis McMichael shot and killed him while William Bryan recorded the murder on his phone.[1]

Trial of murderers

The jury selection process included questions about whether Confederate flags were a racist symbol and whether potential jury members supported BLM or had ever faced discrimination. These questions were designed to exclude anti-racists from participation in the case. The jury was only 8% Black even though it was chosen from a 27% Black county. The defense claimed that Arbery's murder was not caused by racism and that it was self-defense even though Arbery was unarmed.[1]
