- Russian Socialist writer Maxim Gorky is murdered by anti-Soviet reactionary elements.
1942
- Anti-apartheid revolutionary leader and second president of South Africa Thabo Mbeki is born.
1954
- The CIA supported Guatemala coup of 1954 against Jacobo Arbenz's Democratically elected Social Democratic government begins.
1974
- Soviet military leader, Minister of Defence of the Soviet Union, and recipient of the Hero of the Soviet Union award Georgy Zhukov dies at the age of 77.
1984
- The Battle of Orgreave occurs during the United Kingdom Miners Strike of 1984-1985. It began when picketting miners were attacked by police. By the end of the fighting more than 123 people were injured and 95 striking miners were arrested.
1994
- The Unionist terrorist gang Ulster Volunteer Force massacres six Irish Catholic civilians in a put in Loughinisland, Ireland.

- Anti-Nazi fighter and Communist revolutionary author Lina Haag dies at the age of 105.
