René Descartes (31 March 1596 – 11 February 1650) was a French philosopher and founder of rationalism. Despite his idealist views, he played a progressive role against the reactionary Catholic Church and believed religion should follow human reason. He believed truth could only be reached through deductive reasoning.[1]
