The name, according to EcuRed itself, comes from the Spanish word "ecumene" which translates to world, specifically the part of the world that is inhabited by humankind. The latter half of the name, "Red" means "Net" in Spanish. It's merely a coincidence that the color red is symbolic for [[communism]], which is the system advocated for by the [[Communist Party of Cuba|ruling party of Cuba]].
