Saor Éire was an Irish Republican Trotskyist militant and political organization that existed from 1967-1975. It mostly operated in the Republic of Ireland and carried out several armed actions including bank robberies.

History

Saor Éire was founded by Communist former members of the Anti-Treaty Irish Republican Army in 1967. They robbed banks and attacked occupation and collaborator political targets.[1]

In 1970 Richard Fallon, a Republic of Ireland Garda officer, was killed in one of these robberies, leading to the prosecution of Saor Éire members.[2]

In 1971 key figure Peter Graham was killed during a period of internal feuding. This began the decline of the organization.[1]

In 1973 leading members of the group in prison publicly resigned from the group in protest of its actions.[1]

In 1975 Larry White, a leading member of Saor Éire, was assassinated by the Official Irish Republican Army. The same year the organization dissolved completely.[3][1]
