Captain James Cook (7 November [O.S. 27 October] 1728 – 14 February 1779), commonly known as just Captain Cook, was a British maritime explorer, cartographer, coloniser, and naval officer. He became infamous for his three voyages in the Pacific Ocean (1768–71; 1772–75; and 1776–79) in which he made a number of geographic discoveries. During his third voyage, in retaliation for the theft of a boat, he attempted to kidnap the Hawaiian monarch Kalaniʻōpuʻu, resulting in his death.
