Bulgaria, officially the Republic of Bulgaria, is a country in the Balkans. Since capitalism was restored in 1990, 57% of Bulgarians say the economy has become worse[1] and less than 12% say ordinary people are better off.[2]
History
Restoration of capitalism
After the overthrow of socialism in the early 1990's, poverty rates in Bulgaria increased by 750%.[3] 20% of the population left the country and birth rates dropped to their lowest point since 1945. Almost half of Bulgarians were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2011.[2]
