Kyle Rittenhouse is a Statesian right-wing extremist who shot three protestors in Kenosha during the 2020 George Floyd protests. Two of the victims died another was injured.
Kenosha protests[edit | edit source]
Background[edit | edit source]
Kyle Rittenhouse lived in Illinois but traveled to Kenosha in response to a "call to arms" by the white supremacist Kenosha Guard.[1] On August 25, 2020, Rittenhouse went to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where people were protesting against the police shooting of Jacob Blake. He was armed with an AR-15 from his friend's stepfather's house.[2]
Shootings[edit | edit source]
At 11:48 p.m. on August 25, Kyle Rittenhouse pointed his gun at Joshua Ziminski, who was vandalizing cars in a parking lot. Joseph Rosenbaum ran towards Rittenhouse and tried to stop him but was shot in the hip. Rittenhouse shot him three more times after he fell down. Rittenhouse then continued walking until he tripped and tried to shoot another person and missed. Anthony Huber tried to take Rittenhouse's gun away but Rittenhouse fatally shot him.[2]
After the shootings, he left the scene. He encountered police while leaving, but they thanked him and other militia members instead of arresting him[2]. He was later arrested after returning to Illinois.[1]
Trial[edit | edit source]
Rittenhouse pleaded not guilty for all charges and claimed that he acted in self-defense. Judge Bruce Schroeder banned the prosecution from calling the people who were killed "victims" but allowed the defense to call them "looters" and "arsonists." He was found not guilty despite extensive evidence.[3]
