The International Workingmen's Association (IWA), also known as the First International, was an international left-wing organization in the 19th century. It included Marxists, anarchists, and trade unionists. It was founded in 1864 and held its first congress in Geneva, Switzerland in 1866. In 1872, the IWA expelled Mikhail Bakunin and his supporters from the First International.[1]
