Liberation theology is a left-wing form of Christianity that originated in Latin America in the 1960s. It is centered around a communal life among the people. Liberation theology influenced the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua. The CIA and targeted liberation theologists during the 1970s in El Salvador, and Pope John Paul intervened in the Nicaraguan revolution to criticize progressive priests.[1]
