Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (19 November 1917 – 31 October 1984) was an Indian politician who ruled as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1984.
First term
After Nehru's death in 1964, Gandhi became the leader of the Indian National Congress. She was elected as prime minister in 1966. She ruled under martial law during the Emergency from 1975 to 1977.[1]
Last term
Gandhi returned to power in 1980, but her party lost the 1983 elections in southern India. In Assam, the INC won because only 2% of the population voted because of boycotts and widespread ethnic violence.[1]
