The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cabe Verde (PAIGC), is a Bissau Guinean Pan-Africanist opposition party which played an instrumental role in the liberation of Guinea-Bissau from Portuguese colonial rule. After Amílcar Cabral's assassination, Aristides Pereira became Secretary General of the PAIGC and President of Cape Verde while Luis Cabral governed Guinea-Bissau as Chairman of the State Council. The military overthrow of Luis Cabral by João Vieira subsequently resulted in a party split, in which Pereira and the Cabe Verde branch formed the African Party for the Independence of Cabe Verde. Since then the PAIGC has struggled to maintain political power in the country as a series of military regimes took power. Despite the PAIGC losing the 2019 presidential election, the party recently won back its parliamentary majority.[1]
