Edward Wadie Said (1 November 1935 – 24 September 2003) was a Palestinian intellectual who described how racism maintains Western empires. He spent most of his life in the Global North and published Orientalism in 1978. Samir Amin criticized Said's view of empire because it focused more on culture and discourse than material conditions.[1]
