Charles Emil Ruthenberg was a Statesian Marxist and the founder of the Communist Party USA. He spent several years in prison and served as General Secretary of the party from 1919 to his death in 1927.

Political career

Ruthenberg joined the Socialist Party of America in 1909 and was an influential socialist in Ohio. At the party convention in 1912, he opposed a pacifist and anti-revolutionary amendment to the party constitution. He was also involved in the 1917 party convention in St. Louis.[1]

Death

In 1927, Ruthenberg died of apendicitis at the age of 45.[1]
