Genaro García Luna (born 10 July 1968) is a Mexican politician and drug lord with close connections to the CIA and Sinaloa drug cartel. The CIA has over 15,000 pages of classified documents about him. In February 2023, he was convicted of drug trafficking in a U.S. court and could face life in prison. He also took tens of millions of dollars in bribes to pay off police, lawyers, and politicians.[1]

Political career

García Luna began his career as an intelligence operative fighting against the Zapatistas. From 2001 to 2006, he led the Federal Investigation Agency and provided uniforms and vehicles to the Sinaloa cartel. In 2006, President Felipe Calderón appointed him as Secretary of Public Security, and he held that position until 2012. He was a leader of Plan Mérida, which was based on the anti-FARC Plan Colombia.[1]
