Summary[edit | edit source]

(The Wilmington Morning Star, 21 September 1944)

BEFORE AND AFTER — Transition of Joseph Stalin from the pipe-smoking, simply garbed proletarian to cigarette-puffing, nattily-uniformed marshal is one of the most remarkable fashion notes of the war. Famed for his ever-present pipe, black boots, and undecorated semi-military tunic, Stalin is now said to be a chain cigarette smoker. His fawn-coloured marshal's uniform is decorated with the Defence of Moscow, the Order of Suvorov, and the Order of the Red Banner.
