Sundiata Acoli is a Statesian Black liberation activist who spent 49 years as a political prisoner.[1]
Early life[edit | edit source]
Acoli participated in a voter registration drive in Mississippi in 1964. He joined the Harlem chapter of the Black Panther Party in 1968.[1]
Arrest and imprisonment[edit | edit source]
Acoli was arrested as part of COINTELPRO in 1969 and imprisoned for two years before being acquitted. In 1973, he and Assata Shakur were arrested again for allegedly killing a police officer despite a lack of evidence. He was imprisoned for 49 years until being granted parole in 2022.[1]
