Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko, is a Belarusian politician who has served as the President of Belarus since the creation of the office in 1994. Lukashenko halted the capitalist looting of Belarus carried out at the behest of the west by the regime of his predecessor, Stanislav Shushkevich, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, allowing Belarus to suffer less economic damage than the rest of the former socialist states.[1] An ally of Russia, he is opposed to the imperialist powers and advocates for a multipolar world order.[2]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Lukashenko was born on 30 August 1954 in the town of Kopys, in the Vitebsk Oblast of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. He spent most of his young years in the town of Alexandria in the Mogilev Oblast, where he helped his mother with her work as a milkmaid on a local farm whilst she raised him alone. He attended a local rural school before attending Kuleshov Mogilev State University where he studied to become a historian, graduating in 1975. Later after starting work, in 1985 Lukashenko would also receive a diploma of an economist from Belarusian Agricultural Academy.[2]

Career[edit | edit source]

From 1975-77 Lukashenko served in the border troops as a political instructor in the Western Border District before leaving to hold various positions in agriculture and manufacturing whilst being involved with the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Communist Party of Byelorussia. From 1977-90 he worked in various positions including: secretary of the Komsomol Committee of the Food Administration of Mogilev, instructor of the Oktyabrsky District administration of Mogilev, secretary of the Znanie public association of Shklov, deputy head of the Udarnik collective farm of Shklov District, deputy director of a Shklov-based building materials company, and secretary of the party committee of the Lenin collective farm. In 1987, he would take charge of the Gorodets collective farm of Shklov District.[2]

Lukashenko's political career began in 1990 when he was elected to the Supreme Council of Belarus. He led an anti-corruption commission which earned him extensive public support.[2]

Presidency[edit | edit source]

In 1994, Lukashenko decided to run for the presidential office. He was elected President of the Republic of Belarus on 10 July 1994 winning 80.3% of the votes in the second round and beating five other candidates. He would later win landslide victories in the elections of 2001, 2006, 2010, 2015, and 2020.[2]
