Botswana, officially the Republic of Botswana, is a landlocked African country bordered by South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. This former British colony is a western ally, and hosts a US military base.[1]

History

Independence

At the time of independence from the United Kingdom in 1964, Botswana only had 3km of tar road.[1]

Economy

The Botswana government owns a 51% stake in all of its mines, and also owns a 51% stake in Debswana, the main diamond company. The other 49% of Debswana is owned by South African-British company De Beers, which the Botswana government purchased a 20% interest in.[1]
