Joseph Arnold Weydemeyer (2 February 1818 – 26 August 1866) was an early Statesian Marxist and founder of the Proletarian League. He was born in Germany and fought in the Revolution of 1848 before immigrating to the United States in 1851.[1] He described John Brown's abolitionist uprising as a new awakening of the workers' movement that would fight against slavery and wage slavery. During the Civil War, he recruited an entire regiment and fought as a colonel in the St. Louis area.[2]
