Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko was a Soviet sniper and Hero of the Soviet Union. During the Great Patriotic War, she killed at least 309 Nazis, including 36 enemy snipers during the Crimean campaign.[1]
Great Patriotic War
Pavlichenko volunteered for the Red Army in June 1941 in Kiev after German and Romanian fascists invaded the Soviet Union. Having previously trained as a sharpshooter, she was assigned to the southern front as a sniper. She killed 182 fascists near Odessa and many more in Crimea.
In May 1942, Pavlichenko was pulled from fighting after she was wounded. She toured Canada and the United States for the rest of the war and was promoted to Major after returning to the Soviet Union.[1]
Later life
After the war, Pavlichenko became a historian and research assistant for the Soviet Navy. She died in 1974 at the age of 58.[1]
