Michael A. Lebowitz (November 27, 1937 – April 19, 2023) was a Marxist economist. He helped found Students for a Democratic Society and participated in anti-Vietnam War protests during the 1960s. He supported Cuban and Venezuelan socialist movements but criticized other socialist projects for their focus on the productive forces.[1]
Early life[edit | edit source]
In the late 1950s, Lebowitz enrolled in business school. He had to work during the day and take classes at night and began to read Marx, rejecting the neoclassical economics he learned in class. In 1960, he enrolled in the University of Wisconsin and joined the Wisconsin Socialist Club.[1]
Political activism[edit | edit source]
During the 1960s, Lebowitz worked with the New Left journal Studies on the Left. He moved to Canada in 1965 and taught until retiring in 2000. He became Party Policy Chair for the New Democratic Party but later left because of the party's electoralist stance.[1]
