Ronald Dion DeSantis is a Statesian politician and governor of Florida since 2019. While in the Navy, he tortured dissidents at Guantanamo Bay.[1] In 2023 he ran against Donald Trump for the Republican ticket of the 2024 U.S. presidential election before dropping out in early 2024.[2]

Military career[edit | edit source]

Between March 2006 and January 2007 DeSantis was stationed at Guantánamo Bay where he took part in the torture of inmates by advising the use of force feeding during hunger strikes. Since leaving the concentration camp DeSantis has consistently advocated for it to remain open.[3]

Governor of Florida[edit | edit source]

In 2021, DeSantis introduced a bill in Florida charging BLM protestors with felonies and preventing them from voting or having guns.[4]

In 2022, DeSantis signed the reactionary "Stop the Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act," also known as the "Stop WOKE Act," a law that prevented Florida's elementary schools from teaching students about the history of racial and sexual discrimination.[5]

2024 Presidential campaign[edit | edit source]

In May 2023 DeSantis announced his run for President during a conversation with Elon Musk on Twitter, in a broadcast beset with technical difficulties. His campaign was centered around culture wars; attacking trans rights, abortion bans, and book banning.[2]

On January 21 2024, he announced he was pulling out of the race for President after an electoral defeat in Iowa, endorsing Trump for President[6]. In his announcement DeSantis misquoted British Imperialist, Winston Churchill, saying “Success is not final, failure is not fatal – it is the courage to continue that counts.”[2]
