The proposed palace of the Soviets, an example of socialist realist architecture

Architecture is the art of designing and constructing buildings. Like other forms of art, architecture is part of the superstructure and expresses the interests of a certain class. Apolitical art does not exist.[1]

Soviet Union[edit | edit source]

Classicism[edit | edit source]

Classicism was inspired by the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome and the Renaissance.[1]

Constructivism[edit | edit source]

Constructivism emerged in the 1910s and formed the Organization of Modern Architects. Constructivists believed that the form of a building should emerge from its function and often designed buildings to look like machines.[1]

Formalism[edit | edit source]

Formalism, also known as rationalism, prioritized appearance over functionality and used abstract shapes that required less "mental energy" to perceive. They were influenced by the idealist theories of Kant and Bogdanov.[1]

Socialist realism[edit | edit source]

Socialist realism defeated the idealist trends in architecture and portrayed reality in an accurate way to elevate class consciousness.[1]
