The Caucasus or Caucasia is a region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea that includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and parts of southern Russia. The Caucasus Mountains, including the Greater Caucasus range, have historically been considered as a natural barrier between Eastern Europe and Western Asia. The highest mountain located in the Western Caucasus's is Mount Elbrus in the Russian Federation. On the southern side, the Lesser Caucasus includes the Javakheti Plateau and the Armenian Highlands, although part of the region is located in Turkey.

The Caucasus can be divided into the North and South Caucasus, although the Western Caucasus can be considered a part of the Northern Caucasus. The Greater Caucasus mountain range located in the North is mostly shared by the Russian Federation and Georgia as well as the northernmost parts of Azerbaijan. The lesser Caucasus mountain range in the south is occupied by Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia although some parts of the mountain range extend into northeastern Turkey, northern Iran and the Republic of Artsakh.

The region is known for its huge linguistic diversity and those include the Indo-European and Turkic language families as well as the Kartvelian, Northwest Caucasian and Northeast Caucasian language families.
