Clyde Anderson Tolson (May 22, 1900 – April 14, 1975) was the Associate Director of the FBI under Director J. Edgar Hoover. Hoover routinely gave him money to organize contract killings. In May 1964, he began planning the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. with the Klansman Russell Adkins. Tolson paid envelopes of money to informants and $25,000 to the Missouri State Penitentiary to release James Earl Ray so he could be framed.[1]
