Elí Eduardo de Gortari de Gortari was a Mexican communist and professor. He became a rector at the University of Michoacana in 1961. Between 1961 and 1962, he established reforms including a student medical center, increased campus housing, and increased financial support for students.[1]

Targeted by CIA[edit | edit source]

On 1 February 1963, a CIA-funded group of 75 right-wing students accused Gortari of corruption and signed a manifesto to remove him from power. Later that month, the university expelled the students and teachers who signed the manifesto. Less than 20% of the university's professors and only 5% of students opposed Gortari. In March 1963, the new pro-CIA governor, Agustín Arriaga Rivera, fired Gortari and sent the military to the university to suppress student protests. Soldiers wounded several students and killed one.[1]
