Political career[edit | edit source]

Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party in 1966. In 1967, Newton was arrested for killing a police officer in Oakland, California. He was sentenced to prison but the conviction was overturned in 1970. After being released from prison, Newton worked on the Panthers' Free Breakfast for Children program, helped homeless people, and gave away free clothing and food. In 1989, he was shot over a drug dispute.[1]
