José Alberto "Pepe" Mujica Cordano (20 May 1935 – 13 May 2025) was a Uruguayan politician who served as the 40th president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. A former Marxist guerrilla with the Tupamaros, he was a member of the Broad Front coalition of left-wing parties and previously served as minister of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries from 2005 to 2008 and as a senator in various periods.
As a Marxist guerilla he was tortured and imprisoned for 14 years during the military dictatorship in 1970s and 80s but once bourgeois democracy was restored he abandoned his Marxist roots in favour of electoralism and social democracy. His presidency oversaw great social reform in Uruguay, most notably the legalization of abortion and same-sex marriage, but stopped short of more radical change.[1]
