Lê Văn Nhuận, better known as Lê Duẩn, was a Vietnamese communist revolutionary.[1] He served as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam for 26 years, from 1960 until 1986.[2]

Life[edit | edit source]

Lê Duẩn was born on April 7, 1908 in Bich La in Đông Triều in the Triệu Phong district of the Quảng Trị Province. He was raised in the Cẩm Xuyên district of the Hà Tĩnh Province.[3]

Lê Duẩn was one of the founders of Indochinese Communist Party in 1930. In 1960, he became the first secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, taking over from Hồ Chí Minh. In 1976 the position was renamed General Secretary after North Vietnam unified with South Vietnam and Lê Duẩn continued to hold it until 1986.[1][4]

Ideologically, Lê Duẩn's helped to influence many choices made by the Communist Party. He helped to create the military strategies set at the 6th Party Central Conference in November of 1939. He also aided in the development of the policies related to the revolution at the 2nd National Party Congress in February of 1951. Lê Duẩn's policies were also influential in the decision to liberate the south, a decision made at the 15th Resolution of the Party Central Committee.[5] He helped specify the Party's ideology and contributed to the policies in the fight against the USA and the systems of nation defense.[1]
