Nauru, officially the Republic of Nauru, is an island microstate in Oceania, situated in the Pacific Ocean.
History[edit | edit source]
Colonization[edit | edit source]
In the 19th Century the island, and its native population were discovered by the Europeans and in 1888 it was annexed by the German Empire with the blessing of the British.
When phosphate was discovered on the island the Europeans began mining it enthusiastically leading to extensive damage to the islands environment, and health of its citizens.[1]
