A coup d'état was launched in Burkina Faso on January 23 2022.[1] A group of 14 military officers appeared on state television announcing that state power was now in the hands of the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration (PMSR), led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.[2]

It does not appear that the PMSR existed prior to the coup, its formation appears to coincide with the coup itself.

The coup leader, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, went to military school in Paris.[3]

The 2022 coup is being carried out by some of the same individuals who participated in the failed 2015 coup attempt.[3]
