Ronald Harmon Brown (August 1, 1941 – April 3, 1996) was Secretary of Commerce under the Clinton regime. He promoted NAFTA and corporate infiltration of China and Russia and sold satellite technology to China.[1]
Early life[edit | edit source]
Brown attended Middlebury College and served in the Army in south Korea and West Germany. He worked as a lawyer for Ted Kennedy and François Duvalier.[1]
Political career[edit | edit source]
In 1989, Brown was elected as head of the Democratic National Committee, which illegally funded Clinton's campaign.[1]
Brown was involved in several corruption scandals and was investigated by the FBI, Energy Department, Justice Department, and his own Commerce Department. He sold seats on his plane to corporations that donated to Clinton's campaign. He also had insider knowledge about bribes made by Thomas McLarty, head of the Arkansas-Louisiana Gas Company and Clinton's Chief of Staff, to the Oklahoma energy regulation commission. Two weeks before his death, Brown threatened to expose Clinton's crimes unless he protected his son Michael from a corruption investigation.[1]
Death[edit | edit source]
On April 3, 1996, Clinton sent Brown on an unexpected fundraising trip to Bosnia and Croatia to get a $5 billion military contract for Boeing. Brown's mistress, Nolanda Hill, warned him not to go. Ron Brown rode in the plane with Charles F. Meissner, Assistant Secretary for International Economic Policy, while Enron executives took a second plane. Croatian intelligence services paid air traffic controller Niko Jerković to spoof the beacon directing Brown's plane, leading the pilots to fly into Sveti Ivan mountain, 2.6 km from the runway. Jerković was shot dead five days later.[1]
After the crash, Brown's body was found almost 40 meters away from the plane with a bullet hole in his head. After the bullet wound was discovered, X-rays and photos of the body went missing from their case file at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Steve Cogswell believed Brown was murdered after the crash and recommended an autopsy, which never occurred. Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott ordered Croatian TV not to film the crash site.[1]
