During the White Terror, the fascist anti-communist Kuomintang persecuted leftists on Taiwan.

The White Terror begun with martial law being declared on 19 May 1949 which was lifted on 15 July 1987.

The period of the White Terror usually does not include the February 28 incident, where the Nationalist government violently suppressed an uprising in which deaths have ranged between 18,000 and 28,000 people.
