Francisco Franco Bahamonde, was a Spanish military general who ruled Spain under a fascist dictatorship from 1939, when he seized power following the Spanish Civil War, until his death in 1975. Despite ruling a brutal dictatorship, Franco's regime was supported by the west, as they saw the ideology, not dissimilar to their own, as a useful tool against communism.
