Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia separated into two regions by the South China Sea: Peninsula Malaysia and Eastern Malaysia. Peninsular Malaysia is situated in mainland Asia, bordering Thailand to the north with a maritime border with Singapore to the south. Eastern Malaysia is located on the island of Borneo which it shares with Brunei to the north and Indonesia to the south.

The Malayan Communist Party fought against the British colonizers from 1948 until independence in 1957.[1]:249 In 1965, Singapore seceded from Malaysia.[1]:252
